"What do I do if I lock my keys in my car? Can the Police unlock it for me?"
Unfortunately, we are no longer able to unlock your vehicle for you. The reason for this is that we cannot do so on the newer vehicles without damaging the electric locks and/or electric windows. We recommend that everyone have an extra key available in case you lock your normal set in your car. If by chance you do lock your keys in your vehicle and do not have a spare set, Graff Chevrolet-Buick-Olds Inc. or Tubbs Brothers Inc. can usually make you a key for your vehicle for approximately $5.00. In order to do this you simply have to write down the VIN number of your vehicle, which is located in the front drivers-side of the windshield, and take it to either of the dealerships. Both of the car dealerships are located by the west city limits of Sandusky.

"How do I get a copy of a police report?"
We provide copies of accident reports during office hours for a processing fee of $5.00. All other types of reports have to be requested by filling out a Freedom of Information Act (FOI) request. The FOI forms are available at the Sandusky Police Department and at Sandusky City Hall.

"What are the Police Department office hours?"
Our office is usually open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, please note that our employees may not be in the office during these hours because business depends on the events that unfold during each day. Some days we are not available in the office due to an emergency or investigation. If you have an emergency please dial 911. If you have an non-emergency complaint and need a Sandusky Police Officer please call Central Dispatch at 810-648-2000 and they will dispatch a Sandusky police officer to your complaint. This is a faster and more efficient way of obtaining a police officer for help. If you just want to talk to a Sandusky Police Officer you can call 810-648-4016. If there is no answer you may leave a message on our voice mail with you name, phone number, and a short message. We will contact you as soon as we are available. If it is after office hours, please call Central Dispatch for police assistance.

"Where do I go to pay my traffic ticket?"
All traffic tickets are paid at the Sanilac County Courthouse located on West Sanilac Avenue in Sandusky. The tickets are paid at the Traffic Magistrates Office which is located on the third level of the courthouse. For more information please call the Traffic Magistrates Office at 810-648-3424.

"Where do I pay my parking ticket?"
Parking tickets can be paid at Sandusky City Hall. The price is clearly marked on the ticket. However, please note that if payment is made within 72 hours of the issuance date there is a $5.00 reduction in the fine price.

"My neighbor's dog barks all day long. What can I do to stop it?"
Please call our department while the dog is barking! There is a barking dog ordinance in the City of Sandusky and one of our police officers will respond to the residence of the barking dog. However, it helps with our investigation if the officer can witness the dog barking. Once the officer witnesses this, the dog owner will be given a verbal warning. If the dog continues to bark, please let us know. In this case the officer would respond back to the residence for the same barking dog and the owner would be issued a citation and given a fine to pay.

"Someone has abandoned a junk car in my parking lot or on my private property. Can the city tow it away for me?"
If the vehicle is a junk abandoned vehicle then we are unable to tow it away. There is a set procedure to go through that we will help you with in moving the vehicle from your property. If the vehicle is simply abandoned on your property we can run the license plate and tell you who is the registered owner of the vehicle. From there it is out of our hands. If you are the owner of the private property, you have the right to have that vehicle towed off of your property at the owners expense. The vehicle would then be held at the towing services holding garage until the vehicle owner makes payment to the towing company.

"How can I get a shoulder patch from your police department to add to my collection of police patches?"
We also collect patches to display in our lobby. If you have a shoulder patch to exchange with us we would be happy to make an even trade with you. To do so, just send us your patch along with a little note asking to trade. When we receive your patch we will forward one of our to you. If you do not have a patch to trade with us we are able to sell you one of our patches for $5.00. To do so, just send a $5.00 check/money order along with a note asking to purchase a shoulder patch. When we receive your request we will process it and forward you a patch.

"How do I seek employment with the Sandusky Police Department?"
We accept applications year around. If you send us your resume we will put it in our file. When we begin looking for a new hire we re-contact all of the people who have sent us a resume and let them know that we will be hiring soon. At that point, if the applicant is still interested in our department, we send them the proper paperwork to fill out.

"Is there a parking ordinance in that City of Sandusky that prohibits parking on the roadway for snow removal?"
Actually, the City of Sandusky prohibits parking on city streets from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. throughout the year. In the winter we use this time to clear the snow from the streets. In the spring, summer, and fall the street sweeper does cleaning during this time. We also use this time period to drain fire hydrants when needed. If there is some type of a special need (i.e. your driveway being blacktopped) you may contact us and ask for permission to park on the street overnight. For other information please feel free to contact us.

"I have a bunch of brush to get rid of. Does the City of Sandusky pick up brush if I set it by the road?"
The D.P.W. employees go around town on the first Monday of every month and chip up any brush that is set out to the curb. The first 15 minutes of brush chipping is free. After the first 15 minutes the City charges $1.00 per minutes there after. If your brush chipping goes over the 15 free minutes you will receive a bill in the mail within two weeks. Please notice that Waste Management does pick up yard waste every Tuesday. It has to be set to the curb and in a container that is marked "Yard Waste." If you have small sticks, they must be broke down into rather small pieces and bundled so they can easily be picked up.

"When is the garbage picked up in town and what do I do if I have a large item to get rid of?"
Normal garbage pickup is on every Friday. If you have a large item to get rid of, place it at the curb with your regular garbage on Thursday night or early Friday morning. Then call Waste Management at 810-657-9344 and tell them that you have a large item to be picked up. Waste Management will then bring a special truck for that item and will take it along with your normal trash.

"My son/daughter has been court ordered to complete some community service hours and I was referred to your department. When can he/she do these community service hours?"
